Testosterone Replacement Therapy for Men

Feeling worn down, foggy or just not like yourself can be more than a sign of getting older. For men with clinically low testosterone, replacement therapy supervised by a physician may help with symptoms such as low energy. Results vary.

Careful care for low testosterone

Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, and stress, poor sleep, excess weight and certain medical conditions can lower them further. When levels fall too low, men often notice fatigue, reduced strength, a lower sex drive and a flat mood that is hard to explain.

We do not guess. Your evaluation includes a detailed symptom review and morning blood work, because testosterone is highest early in the day. A single reading is not enough, so we may repeat testing to confirm the result before recommending treatment.

If therapy is appropriate, you and your provider choose a delivery method that fits your life: weekly injections, a daily cream or gel, or long-acting pellets placed in the office. Throughout treatment we track testosterone, blood counts and other markers so that your dose stays in a healthy range and any side effects are caught early.

Testosterone therapy has possible risks, including elevated red blood cell counts, prostate effects that need monitoring, worsening of sleep apnea and reduced sperm production. Testosterone is a controlled substance, and pellets are compounded preparations that are not FDA-approved.

Many men notice improvements in energy and mood within a few weeks, while changes in muscle and body composition typically take several months. Results vary.

It can lower sperm production. If you hope to have children, tell us at your first visit so we can discuss alternatives or other approaches.

We typically recheck testosterone, red blood cell counts and other markers a few weeks after starting and then at regular intervals, adjusting your dose as needed.
