PRP & PRF Injections
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are made from a small sample of your own blood. Concentrated and placed where you hurt, they are used to support healing in joints, tendons and soft tissue.
Healing signals from your own blood
Platelets carry growth factors that help direct the body’s repair work. By spinning a sample of your blood, we concentrate those platelets many times beyond their normal level in the bloodstream, then deliver them to the area that needs help.
PRF is a related preparation that includes a fibrin matrix, which holds the growth factors in place and releases them more slowly. We discuss which preparation suits your situation. Because both are made from your own blood, allergic reactions are uncommon. Most patients notice gradual improvement over several weeks, and some need a short series of treatments.
At a glance

- Source
- A small blood draw from you

Who it may help
Patients with ongoing trouble in:
- Knees and hips
- Shoulders

- Achilles and other tendons
- Muscle and ligament strains
- Plantar fasciitis
What to expect
- 1Blood draw. A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, much like a routine lab test.
- 2Processing. The sample is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, which takes a few minutes.
- 3Targeted injection. After the area is numbed, the preparation is injected where it is needed. Soreness for a day or two is common.

PRP and PRF questions
What is the difference between PRP and PRF?
PRP is a liquid concentrate of platelets. PRF also contains fibrin, a natural scaffold that helps the growth factors stay in place and release over time. We recommend one based on the area being treated.
How soon will I feel better?
The first few days can bring some soreness. Many patients notice improvement gradually over about 4–8 weeks, and results vary by condition.
Can I take anti-inflammatory medicine afterward?
Often we ask patients to avoid anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen for a period before and after treatment, since inflammation is part of the healing process. We give you specific instructions at your visit.
Is it safe?
Because the material comes from your own blood, the risk of rejection is low. As with any injection, there is a small chance of infection, bleeding or temporary flare-up, which we review with you beforehand.
