Natural Thyroid Treatment
If you take thyroid medicine and still feel tired, cold or foggy, your treatment may not be the right fit for your body. Desiccated thyroid is an alternative that some patients ask about when standard therapy has not fully relieved their symptoms.
A different approach to an underactive thyroid
Your thyroid gland produces two main hormones, T4 and T3. The most common prescription replaces only T4 and relies on your body to convert it to T3, the active form. Some people do not convert efficiently, and their labs can look normal while symptoms linger.
Desiccated thyroid is derived from porcine thyroid glands and contains both T4 and T3. For selected patients, this combination may help with symptoms that persisted on T4 alone, although evidence for desiccated thyroid is limited. It is not the right choice for everyone, and we only recommend it after a careful review of your labs, history and other medications.
Major endocrine societies recommend levothyroxine (T4) as first-line therapy, so we usually begin the conversation there.
We look beyond a single TSH number. A fuller panel can include free T3, free T4 and thyroid antibodies, along with related factors such as iron, vitamin D and blood sugar that can mimic or worsen thyroid symptoms. Doses are started low, then adjusted gradually with repeat labs until your symptoms and lab results line up.

Desiccated thyroid questions
What is the difference between desiccated and standard thyroid medicine?
Standard medicine usually contains only T4, while desiccated thyroid contains both T4 and T3. Which works better varies from person to person.
Can I switch from my current medicine?
Often, yes, but the change should be supervised. We calculate an equivalent starting dose and recheck labs a few weeks later to confirm it suits you.
Is desiccated thyroid safe?
When prescribed and monitored properly, many patients tolerate it well. Too much thyroid hormone can cause palpitations, anxiety or bone loss, which is why regular labs are important.
How long until I feel better?
Some patients notice a difference within a few weeks, though full benefit may take a couple of months of dose adjustments. Results vary.
